Chippenham Harriers 83

Springfield tri 2 May 2005 – a race report by Peter Cusick

Swim 9.00 (183/223)

Bike 43.03 (83/223)

Run 21.10 (20/223)

Total 1.13.13 72/223

What went well

  1. Got there nice and early!
  2. Swim went reasonably well
  3. Changing into bike/run gear
  4. Spinning hard last half mile of the bike seemed to avoid “jelly legs”
  5. Lock laces in shoes
  6. Got into stride quickly and ran a good time
  7. Tri shorts
  8. Tee shirt worked well – but number belt way fwd

What I could improve upon

  1. Getting out of the pool – deep end – took 4 attempts to get out – gallery and starters cheered/clapped when I made it! Had to swim to the corner and hook leg into drainage channel. Need to practice!
  2. Remember to take 2 pairs of specs so after leaving specs in helmet for race I can still see before getting ready for the swim!
  3. Practice swim with watch with lap counter so can record swim/bike/run
  4. Make sure I’m ready for the swim starter to say go – not looking wrong way and having watch still on time not stopwatch!
  5. T1 and T2 – practice finding the bike on the day – find a method – count the number of bikes in the row? Wasted time twice trying to find location (having to put prescription goggles back on (!) at T1 to find the rack numbers!) Orange beach towel did not help.
  6. Worked hard on the bike but not hard enough – more time trial experience required. The time lost from getting out of the pool (see 1 above) and finding the bike was added to my bike time so not quite as bad as that time suggests.
  7. 2-3 swim turns very poor
  8. Goggles leaked (for first time!)- why? Something to do with the swmg cap?
  9. Getting swim cap off was a struggle – never used one before.
  10. Made up lucozade sports drink for the bike but disagreed with me (too concentrated?) – use water next time
  11. Not dropping the water bottle on the road during the early stages of the bike
  12. Didn’t get overtaken at all during the bike or the run – overtook lots of people which had positive effect but no-one to pace off or follow (I mean legally re the bike not drafting!).

Overall a great experience and plenty of things to improve upon.
