A bit of history of the Chippenham Harriers, Chippenham Harriers 83 was formed in 1983. The original Chippenham Harriers folded some time prior to the 1983 version that has been in existence for the last 25 years. Some of you may have wondered why we were called Chippenham Harriers 83, this was due to the fact that at the time the previous Harriers disbanded owing money. By calling the new club CH83 avoided being chased by the old club's creditors for reimbursement. The 83 logo and name has now recently been dropped from official club details as it is now deemed as being irrelevant. The club colours were the same as now, a blue band around the vest at chest level. In 2008 Chippenham Harriers celebrated the clubs 25th Anniversary and re-established the Chippenham Half marathon, the rest as they say is history.
Today Chippenham Harriers is a friendly running club with 150+ active members. We welcome runners of all abilities over the age of 17 years. We meet on Tuesdays (7pm) & Thursdays (7pm) at Chippenham Sports & Social Club. If you are not 17 yet, don't worry you can join our youth section.
On Tuesdays we do speed sessions and on Thursdays we run a predetermined route of between 3 and 7 miles. We try and divide people into groups of similar speeds and ensure that there is a sweep so that no one runs alone. We advise new members to attend Thursday nights for their first session as this is our official club night when have announcements and stop for a drink and bite to eat after the run. There is free parking and showers available at the Sports and Social Club.
For those who want to take up running we have organised a number of successful beginners group in the past. We organise an eight week programme for all abilities. We met each Friday night at 6:30pm - 7:30pm at the Sports & Social Club, we may be introducing this again during the year or why not pop down on our main Thursday club night.
New members are encouraged to attend the first Thursday of each month, come along meet us and see what you think.
We have a series of Club Championship Events and organise a number of our own races throughout the year. We organise monthly social events and a web based club forum which sets out news and views!
Chippenham Harrier Youth is at 6:45pm-8.00pm every Wednesday at Chippenham Sports Dome for ages 11 to 17 years. All sessions will be led by coaches qualified to England Athletics Level 2 or above.
Chippenham Harriers is an affiliated club of the British Triathlon Federation (BTF), England Athletics, UK Athletics (UK:A) and The Association of Running Clubs (ARC).
Annual membership for 2010 is £35. This includes annual membership to the Sports and Social club and your England Athletics competition license.
